Dear Editor: There appears to be considerable confusion surrounding the propos- ed public golf course in Seymour’s Northlands. A public golf course should be supported for the fol- lowing reasons. It will help strengthen our role under the Regioral Plan to remain a low-density community. It will emphasize the regional recreation potential for the North Shore and will fill an important need. The changing demographics, more senior citizens and increased leisure time, will make it even more attractive. It is central to Seymour and will enhance the quality of life. Leasing the land for a public golf course, as opposed to selling it for housing, will enable North Vancouver District to have a per- manent income and ensure, at the same time, permanent municipal control for the benefit of the public. Park well used Dear Editor: In a recent article about Lower Lonsdale parking problems, Thomas Makris is quoted as say- ing, ‘This park (Waterfront) is not used at all by people....”” I do take exception and I hope there are more letters to city hall and the North Shore News. “No one’? was at the park for the Vancouver Symphony Concert this year — wrong. It was packed with several thousand for this event. If you look each Sunday in the summer the park is full — especially on ‘‘ethnic’’ days. Even in the fall, winter and spring the park is a restful place to just walk or sit and look at the water and the great view of the city of Van- couver. We finally got our access to the waterfront and there is a sugges- tion of turning it into a parking lot. No. I realize parking is limited; bus service is excellent if people would use it — I do. Possibly ICBC or BC Rail could rent out their park- ing in the evenings with a person on the gate to collect payment, or people could walk a few blocks or be dropped off, or a valet service paid by the restaurant...just ideas. On Sundays people walk or park as far away as 5th and Mahon/ Chesterfield to use the park — it’s ridiculous to say it is not used. Other days of the week parking is a bit easier but there is always someone in the park...maybe painting, jogging, walking the dog, but it is used. J. Unlike other municipalities, the District of North Vancouver does not even have a development cost charge bylaw in place and most of the money from land sales has to be spent on costs arising out of de- velopment — not just direct costs but also indirect costs. It is a myth that more develop- ment means lower taxes. The very opposite is true. Despite multi- million dollar land sales each and every year, taxes for homeowners have risen steadily. The same is true for playing fields, elernentary and secondary schools and other amenities. All in all a public golf course in Seymour makes sense from every possible angie.
