with trees is green.

in that they manufacture food for
the tree. Water and dissolved min-
erals from the soil are taken in by
the roots and drawn up by the

Before leaves drop, other pig-
ments present in the leaves but not
visible during the growing season,
begin to show off their vibrant
colors as soon as the chlorophyll
begins to break down and doesn’t
mask them any longer. Major
groups of pigments are the pale
Orange carotenes (found in large
quantities in carrots), the purer
yellow xanthophylls and the reds
and purplish reds.
