Evidence presented. at the inquest showed that a North Vancouver man, initially only slapped on the wrist by police, was responsible for running a stop sign and hitting the motorcyclist, who died of massive in- ternal injuries hours after the Aug. 4 accident. The coroner presiding over the motorcycle death of 30-year-old Brian Allinson found the North Vancouver RCMP investigation to be incomplete at best — if not / downright shoddy. The original police investigation stated that the car driven by Jon Millar had failed to yield to the motor- cycle after stopping at the sign, and that it was moving al 12 to 15 mph at point of impact, with the motorcy- cle moving at 25 to 30 mph. But further investigation by Al Allinson’s lawyer determined the car ran the stop sign at about 50 mph, with the motorcyclist — who had the right of way — moving at 25 to 30 mph. Police officers attending the scene of the accident failed to take testimonies from all of the witnesses available, a basic requirement for any accident or crime scene. Maybe the officer involved thought the motorcyclist was in stable condition, since he was con- scious at the scene; and maybe he thought the series of events were straightforward, making further investiga- tion seen) redundant. But it is not a police officer’s duty to single-handed- ly wrap up a case without referring to the facts, the evidence and the testimonies. Police procedures have been ‘established to ensure justice is carried out — of- ficers must follow through on these legal checks and counterchecks.
