Vehicles should be positioned so that they do not touch each other, and batteries must be of the same voltage. A quick look at the vehi- cles’ batteries should tell drivers if they are the same. Before hooking up the jumper cables, drivers should be sure the batteries’ caps are on tight. A damp rag placed over the caps will reduce the chance of injury from possible harmful acid or vapor discharge. For safe and efficient jump star- ting, motorists should follow these steps: *Connect the positive booster cable to the positive post of the dead battery. eConnect the other end of the same cable to same marked post of the booster battery. Connect the second booster cable (negative) to the other post of the booster battery. *Make final booster cable con- nection on engine block of stalled vehicle away from battery. With the cables connected pro- perly, the driver should start the booster vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. When the stalled vehicle is started, the jumper cables should be removed in the reverse order of connection.
