dismay that their car batteries are
weak, or even worse, dead.

wrong way to hook up the cable.
The right way means the car will
start with a minimum of fuss; the
wrong way could mean personal
injury or a damaged automobile

Jumper cables must be con-
nected in parallel, with the positive
terminal on the booster battery
connected to the positive terminal
on the dead battery.

Vehicles should be positioned so
that they do not touch each other,
and batteries must be of the same
voltage. A quick look at the vehi-
cles’ batteries should tell drivers if
they are the same.

Before hooking up the jumper
cables, drivers should be sure the
batteries’ caps are on tight. A
damp rag placed over the caps will
reduce the chance of injury from
possible harmful acid or vapor
discharge.

For safe and efficient jump star-
ting, motorists should follow these
steps:

*Connect the positive booster
cable to the positive post of the
dead battery.

eConnect the other end of the
same cable to same marked post of
the booster battery.

Connect the second booster
cable (negative) to the other post
of the booster battery.

*Make final booster cable con-
nection on engine block of stalled
vehicle away from battery.

With the cables connected pro-
perly, the driver should start the
booster vehicle and let it run for a
few minutes. When the stalled
vehicle is started, the jumper
cables should be removed in the
reverse order of connection.

Acid vapor or acid splashes can
sometimes spray out from the
older-style batteries, causing
serious injury.

When working under the hood
of a vehicle, never smoke or light a
match,

*Watch out that metallic tools
such as wrenches and screw drivers
do not fall on the battery termi-
nals. Hitting the terminals could
cause sparks, leading to battery
explosion,

While charging, jump starting or
testing a battery, stay well clear to
avoid possible serious injury from
