LGH forum

cording to Lions Gate Hospital cardiologist Dr. Ken Woo.

EXPERT SPEAKERS

The guest speaker for the March
2 forum is Dr. Robert Gibson,
cardiologist from Charlotteville,
Virginia. The forum begins at 7:30
p.m. at the LGH Terrace Cafete-
ria.

Gibson and Woo will be joined
by Dr. Michael Hayden, a Van-
couver researcher in lipids; family
and emergency room physician Dr.
Michael Davidson; and Vancouver
cardiologists Dr. Richard Hooper
and Dr. Hilton Ling.

Woo said LGH Coronary Care
Unit has about 600 admissions
each year, of which approximately
250 suffer heart attacks.

National statistics indicate heart
disease claimed 47,407 lives, mak-
ing it the leading cause of death in
Canada in 1985.

Woo explained that a heart at-
tack occurs when there is a
blockage of the coronary arteries,
which supply blood to the heart
muscle.

He said, to a significant degree,
a heart attack can be prevented, or
at least limited.

For prevention he said the
various risk factors should be ad-
dressed and corrections made,
