Transit fare machines will be a thing of the past. Some of the machines have been updated so new bills will be accepted. B.C. Transit officials say they hope to have all of the machines overhauled by the end of December. North Van council gives itself a raise NORTH VANCOUVER City aldermen decided Monday to give themselves a $45 raise. City staff will bring forward a bylaw that will raise the aldermen’s annual wage to $9,645, up less than’one half per cent from the present $9,600 rate. The mayor will see a similar hike in his annual salary — his yearly pay will now increase frorn $30,040 to $32,130, a hike of less than one half per cent. Mayor Jack Loucks reminded council of an earlier motion to have salary hikes considered year- ly. This way, he said, council would not be put in a position to vote itself a large increase one year after having no increases for a while. “1 couldn’t believe anyone recommending (an increase of) one half of one per cext,’’ said Ald. Stella Jo Dean, who proposed the increase not be accepted. Swan har expanded and WoW Was On “Attic” filkea with tyaditional- Chvistinas Adight. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter Until this week, none of the 11 ticket machines located at the north and south SeaBus terminals were capable of processing the bills. But now three of the south ter- minal's six machines and two of the north terminal’s five machines have been reprogrammed to accept the new $2 bills. B.C. Transit spokesman George Stroppa said reprogramming all 90 of the machines along the SkyTrain and SeaBus_ systerns should be completed by the end of December. Stroppa said reprogramming (he ticket) machines was delayed because B.C. Transit did not get a copy of the new bill in time. “We didn’t get a copy...until Jate summer,” Stroppa said. ‘‘And it takes at feast four months co reprogram the machines. It’s a very complex process.” B.C. Transit installed the first of the Swiss-made computer ticket machines at the two SeaBus sta- * tions in October 1985, and subse- installed 79 additional quently along its SkyTrain machines system. Stroppa said the machines have the capacity to distinguish between three different types of bills at one time. Initially the machines were pro- grammed to accept $1, $2 and $5 bills, but the their capability to read the old $5 bills was dropped 100% COTTON T-NECKS SUNGLASSES WHISTLER VILLAGE TNECKS CAN-SKI FANNY PACK CAN-SK! The majority of the machines now read the old and new $1 bills and the old $2 bills. Stroppa said the machines will eventually be programmed to ac- cept only the new $1, $2 and $5 bills when all the old bills of each denomination are out of circula- tion. He added that the machines will have no trouble accepting the new $1 coins when they are issued in early 1987 because the mint for- warded a sample of the coin to B.C. Transit over a year ago. With the hundreds of checks each machine must make to verify each bill, reprogramming all 90 B.C. Transit ticket machines costs about $60,000, Stroppa said.
