A SUNTAN is onc of the pleasant
reminders of a warm, summer
holiday but a burn and peeling
leave only memories of discomfort
and pain.

Fair complexioned people,
especially blonds and redheads, are
particularly prone to burning —
and some doctors say 80 per cent
of aging among all skin types is
caused by prolonged exposure to
the sun.

Sunbathers should aim for
gtadual exposure by starting out
slowly to build up resistance to the
sun.

“Your first step is to know your
skin type and the second step is to
choose a suntan fotion or
sunscreen with the appropriate sun
protection factor for your skin,” a
consultant dermatologist advises.

A person who wishes to develop
a tan should avoid the sun between
1] a.m. and 2 p.m. — the hours of
greatest sunburn risk.

On the first day of sunning, fair
skinned people should stay in the
sun for only 15 minutes, while
medium and olive-skinned people
