Sports Tour de Hawke becomes local sports classic THREE YEARS AGO, Brian ‘The Hawk’ Hake, a 26-year-old North Shore fireman, organized 18 friends for an informal bicy- cle ride from the North Shore to Wreck Beach. This year, the ‘‘Tour de Hawk’’ was so popular reg- istration; had to ‘be cut at 110 cyclists. A ride in the Tour de Hawke, includes breakfast at Hake’s residence, and refreshment at the many stops along the way. A fce goes toward rental of vans and trucks to carry the bikes of riders who, for one reason or another, are un- willing or unable to make the return trip. Last year, 72 riders stop- ped at Third Beach, took refreshment, then pulled up at English Bay, where Hake gave an inspirational speech in the style of Benito Mussolini. Filled with fresh zeal, the Tour de Hawke pressed on to Kits Beach where they held a quick, 72-man volleyball game. The tour then invaded Spanish Banks and treated astonished onlookers to a rousing choral version of ‘*Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’’. At Jericho Beach, one overheated rider drove his bike into a murky frog pond. Witnesses said ‘the just kept peddling until he disappeared.'’ _ For a finale, the Tour de Hawke swarmed down onto Wreck Beach, where vans were waiting with cold refreshment. While slaking their thirst, the group fielded an impromptu entry into the Wreck Beach Volleyball Tournament. The Tour team proceeded to whip all op- position winning every game before the riding schedule forced it to move on. Most riders chose to make the return trip by van, although some, (there are some ex-professionals in the tour), pedalled back to the Capilano Rugby Club for a wind-yp dinner.
