AFTER MONTHS of
debate, North Vancouver
District Council has voted to
support a ‘‘compromise
solution’ by B.C. Transit
that will see bus service to
Pemberton Heights reduced.

Originally, B.C. Transit
had proposed to eliminate
evening and Sunday service
entirely. The new proposal
calls for service every two
hours instead of the every
hour service now enjoyed by
the route’s commuters on
evenings and Sundays.

If approved by the Van-
couver Regional Transit
Commission, the change
would come into effect June
28.

B.C. Transit had consid-
ered dropping the evening
and Sunday service due to
the area’s low population
base of 1600 people and
overall low ridership.

It was estimated that if the
cuts were approved, along
with a reduction in the
number of total Sunday trips
— down from 16 to four —
ridership would decline by
about 50 per cent, with a
total of 5,000 rides lost an-
nually, |

The savings of the reduced
service were estimated at
$41,000, with the revenue
loss projected at $3,600,
resulting in a net cost savings
of $37,400

However, in meetings be-
tween District and B.C.
Transit staff, it was decided
that although the route was
not cost-effective to operate,
that a minimum’ service
would be provided for
Pemberton Heights residents
who are dependent on the
transit system. .

Mayor Marilyn Baker and
Ald. Ernie Crist opposed the
recommendation, with Crist
saying he is opposed to any
cuts in transit service.

Following the vote,
District staff was directed to
ask B.C. Transit for details
on the status of proposed
cuts for other North Van-
couver routes.
