Ao - Friday, December 7, 1984 - North Shure News Gl editorial page NEWS VIEWPOINT Freedom upheld Rn TERRBE TANG 10 000 HE DISMISSAL by the B.C. Press SS; THOSE BEAUTIFUL TREES ! “ 5 Council of a complaint against colum- nist Doug Collins and the North Shore News by a UBC professor is a landmark deci- sion with wide and welcome implications. At the Council’s public hearing Professor Ridington charged that Collins and The News (in publishing him) were guilty of ‘‘a pattern of misinformation’’, fostering pre- judice against women and ethnic groups, and ‘*deprecating the reality and validity of our multicultural Canadian society .’’ In its judgement, the Council found no evidence of misinformation in Collins’ writ- ing. It noted that his commentary was fre- quently distasteful to some members of the community but pointed out that such people had been given full opportunity by The News itself to rebut Collins in published letters to the editor. Above all, the Council emphasiz- ed its own first stated objective: “‘to preserve the established freedom of the press.”’ The ruling serves notice that) opinions--- however controversial---on matters of public concern, and based on factual truth, are not to be suppressed in a democratic society merely because they offend certain in- dividuals or pressure groups. Otherwise, the door is wide open for vocal and energetic VIEW FROM THE MIDDLE minorities to exert a creeping tyranny over sae Pr eee eee ee ee the interests of the majority which, in more countries than one, has eventually led to the ? subversion of democracy itself.
