Furk stresses responsibility ‘““COMMONSENSE $s solu- tions to our common prob- lems’’ is the formula recom- mended by West Vancouver school trustee Margot Furk who is seeking re-election for a second term on November 19. ‘*Everybody believes in quality education and many say they recognize the neces- sity for restraint,’’ she notes, ‘*However, saying it and do- ing something about it are two entirely different things.”’ Furk recalls that she ran for school board in 1981 ona platform of fiscal responsi- bility — before restraint was introduced. She believes the choice is not between children or money, but between sensible management for the benefit of all or ‘‘an irresponsible mortgaging of our future to satisfy current unrealistic expectations.’’ She cites two years of ‘‘res- ponsible fiscal management” by the 1981-83 school board — including ‘‘substantial school tax relief“for property owners — which has put the board in a goad position to deal with restraint. The big needs for the next two years, she declares, are: @To focus on academic and technological skills: @To redirect money and personnel away from _ ad- ministration and back to the classroom; @To lay greater emphasis MARGOT FURK on individual and family responsibilities. Married with two children, Furk is a Chartered Accoun- tant with 13 years experience in public accounting and private practice. Kroon focuses on efficiency ‘“*THE LAST SIX years on council have seen many changes in the City of North Vancouver, but | believe that the challenge for the next two years will be the most dif- ficull,”"” says Alderman Elko Kroon who ts seeking a fur- ther term in the November 19 election He notes that past growth, esp cially in che commercial sector, has increased the tax base, making it easier to maintain and expand servies. But he warns that the ex pected 1984 reduction in pro. vincial grants wil change that situauon “Combined with the pre- sent economic climate,’* he fecls, “"(it) will create greater demand on pcople'’s services and therefore we will have to it fp, AGIFT JUST FOR YOU.
