KING EVERY NOW and then when I'm talking to someone about life insurance, I get told that “life insurance is not a good investment.” | invariably agree with the statement, but I don't just leave it there. I quickly explain that in my view, while life insurance tS NO more an investment than say, a storm window, it is no less desirable. Life imsurance is mostly just hfe insurance and the fact that if you don't die you can get something back from your program is a bonus — a bonus that is pre-arranged, of course. Investments are things with growth possibilites. Fixed-return media — which include bank savings, bonds, and traditionald forms of life insurance — do not qualify as investments. The only things which can grow in an unscheduled way in traditional life policies are dividends. Life imsurance is mostly for protection. Depending on the policy, in time the policy's cash calue plus dividend accumulation may exceed the total amount you've laid out in premiums. If you cashed the policy in at this point, it means you would have given your family financial protection over many years and still got all your premium money back. Now if you had known you were going to be so healthy and also that you were going to manage to avoid fatal accidents through the entire penod your family was dependent on you. 1 would have been much smarter to have put the same number of dollars into investments You would have done much better than merely getting your money back (if you made the right investments, that is; with some in- vestments I can think of you would have been lucky to get your shirt back). Since ill health or ac- cidents can happen to anybody, it is a very good idea to make sure our lives are insured adequately. The kind of insurance to do this with depends on the in- dividual — and I'l be getting into this topic in future columns. Just in passing, when | qualified some references to life insurance policies above by terming them “traditional” — what I was doing was taking. into consideration the new “variable” policies on the market, some of which may have an investment element. Yul have a look at these sometime soon, too, in this space. I always advise people to establish a sound life in- surance program before they start worrying about getting a big return on their bucks. This principle was nicely upheld by Thoreau. He said “Goodness is the only in- vestment that never fails,” (and as a matter of fact, I'll have to take his word for it that that is so). Managing three things to do these takes careful planning. Sometimes the personal adjustments required to implement the resulting plans will be dif- ficult, but they're not im- possible if one 1s realistic about one’s lifestyle and mnanges to stay gainfully employed Marilynne A.
