MORE LAYOFFS ON WAY? GM may get even tougher OSHAWA, Ont. (UPC) - General Motors of Canada may have to consider more stringent measures than the temporary layoff of thousands of employees if the current production slowdown does not reduce bulging inventories, a company spokesman said Thursday. GM spokesman Nicholas Hall said the company hoped the slowdown and week-long layoffs at production plants throughout Ontario, combined with an aggressive marketing campaign, would move stock piled vehicles off plant grounds onto dealer lots. “We have a lot of 1981 cars in the dealers’ hands, so they're not ordering °82s,” Hall said. “We've embarked on a number of projects to reduce the number of 1981 cars on dealers’ lots. We have a reduced interest-rate program and the Ontario government sales tax rebate program for 1981 models. These things have been quite effective during the recent period. “We've had a marketing campaign throughout the fal and we certainly will keep up very vigorous marketing activities. We hope that the customers will come and’ start placing orders.” were to be laid off in- definitely.
