help us plan our first trip to
Europe. We've got four
weeks, give or take a few
days. Our only priorities are:

1. Ashort visit to Holland to
visit a family my husband
met during the war.

2. London - and perhaps a
short trip into the English
countryside.

3. Ten days or so in a warm
spot for sun, sand and
beach before we come
home.

We have booked a flight to
London for the last week in
May and return four weeks
later.

Can you give us any ad-
vice?

Budgeting across Britain

Apart from the obvious,
and polite, question of how
we enjoyed our month in
Britain, the next most

popular “Was it expensive?’,

was a strong second.

Of course it was. Even by
cutting corners, it is difficult
to take three people,
transport them across the
ocean, rent a car, find ac-
comodation, eat and be
entertained for that length of
time without it being
somewhat pricey.

I can also say that it was not
the horror story we had been
hearing over the last couple
of years. ,

You've heard all those
stories, about how you can’t
get a place to stay in London
under $100 a night; about
how expensive the meals
are; about how costly the
fuel is and how expensive it
is just to do the ordinary
things.

And they’re partially true.
But to counter that have you
tfied to do these same things

mentioned costs so I assume
that you can afford air travel
between European cities if
you wish to save time.

If I had this program in
mind, I'd leave your visit to
London to the end of your
four weeks. Upon arrival, I'd
stay overnight near the
airport and fly over to
Amsterdam the next day.
That short rest will help you
get acclimatized before you
meet your friends’ in
Holland.

If you can, don’t spend all
your time in Holland in one
place. It’s one of my favorite
countries because there's
just so much to see and do. If
you can perhaps rent a car
and circle down through
Haarlem, Breda _ and
Maastricht, returning to
Amsterdam.

Next, I'd fly to either the
south of Spain,
Torremolinos, Funghirola or

on this side of the ocean? In
Vancouver?

As far as the ac-
comodation went, we
generally stuck to Bed and
Breakfast with Scotland
running about six pounds per

night per person at the
highest or $13.20 at the
exchange rate in early

October. England was about
a pound per night more
costly. And as I've said

before, even if we had the

neccessary funds, we would

still go the B&B route. The

Portugal. If you want sand
beaches, avoid the French.
Riviera (gravel) or the ™
Italian Riviera (crowded,
gravelly). I'm no expert on .
Portugal - a couple of days in
and out of Lisbon but it
sounds to me like a super

The best beaches I've ever
seen in that part of the world -
are in North Africa -
(especially the Atlantic side |
of Morocco and in Bizerta, -.:
Tunisia). Unfortunately, the -
way of life doesn’t lend itself .;.
to lounging around the ‘sand .
in a bikini. i
By planning London for |
the end, you'll have a chance
to shop without hauling your
purchases all over God's
Half Acre. I'd caution you
about shopping in Holland - I
find the prices outrageous. If .
