Al6 - Wednesday, November 26, 1980 - North Shore News HE community roundup Double blow for church The death of Mrs. Edna Smith on November 11 was the culmination of a double tragedy for the congregation of St. David’s United Church, West Vancouver. The previous month her husband, Rev. Ronald Smith, minister of St. David's for the past 17 years, suddenly suffered a major heart attack which almost proved fatal. He was confined to Lions Gate Hospital for five weeks with no visitors allowed except for his family. Ten days later Mrs. Smith, who had faithfully visited her husband during the crisis period, was herself struck down by a massive heart attack. At Lions Gate Hospital and later at St. Paul’s every available resource was used in the battle for her life, but without success. On Remembrance Day _ she finally passed away. A great asset to. her husband in his ministry, Mrs. Smith sang in the choirs, led youth and study groups and, at the time of her death, was president of the United Church Women at St. David's. Over 400 people attended her memorial service in the church November 16. Rev. Smith, meanwhile, is still recuperating and hopes to return to his ministry in mid-December. He says he and his family are overwhelmed by the condolences offered by so many people. He wishes to express his sincere gratitude to the many churches, prayer groups and individuals throughout the North Shore who have shown their concern in so many kind and considerate ways. 100th birthday marked Congratulations and good wishes from friends and family were extended to Mrs. Harriet Marr, a long- time resident of North Vancouver, who celebrated her 100th birthday November 21, in the Ex- tended Care Unit of Lions Gate Hospital.
