anne a, CHURCH NEWS 11 - Sunday, November 27, 1988 - Lynn Valley Echo New Hope church celebrates one year IN CELEBRATION of New Hope Community Church’s first anniversary, its members launched a flotilia of balloons Sunday, Nov. 16, from the church meeting place at Rec- Centre Lynn Valley. Each of t:.>.100 balloons had a Bible verse and message of hope attached, says church pastor Rev. Eugene Harter. The only Mennonite church on the North Shore, New Hope Community Church began last year following a massive phone campaign in which 16,000 North Shore homes were telephoned by church volunteers. “It’s a very non-traditional technique,’’ said parishioner Trevor Larson. Harter says that of the 16,000 numbers called, 9,000 residents were at home. The 9,000 were asked if they were already members of a church; if not, they were invited to the first service of the New Hope Community Church. Harter says about 60 people came to that first service, and the ancrage Sunday attendance is now However, the numbers will soon be on the increase if the church’s Project Vision 2000 is successful. “We envisage a congregation of 2,000. by the year 2C00,”’ said Harter. The first step towards achieving this goal is the lay pastor move- ment that is currently underway at New Hope. Under Harter’s direc- tion, seven members of the con- gregation are training to become lay pastors who will lead ‘‘TLC’’ groups in homes across the North Shore. Harter describes the groups as “Bible study geared to building strong relationships."’ He says many people are filled with bit- terness following a divorce, or still carry around bitterness for their parents or siblings that stems from their childhood. Until that feeling is dealt with, he says, they aren’t able to go on to form meaningful Church Calendar Dec. 4: Lynn Valley CGITs (Canadian Girls in Training) present their Christmas service, 7:30 p.m., at Lynn Valley United Church. 3201 Mountain Highway.
