improve street safety along

Alda Silkatns, chairperson of a
residents improvement cominittee,
appeared before council Monday
to suggest a variety of solutions to
safety problems along the length
of the Deep Cove cul de sac. The
road services approximately 130
residences and the Seycove
Marina.

The district engineering
department) organized a public
meeting in May to publicize street
restoration planned to start this
sumimer.

And while residents say they
fully support the plans, they feel
that minimal revisions to the cur-
rent design would upgrade street
safety at minimum cost if the
work is incorporated with propos-
ed repairs to the road base and
installation of curbs.

Silkalns presented = slides
highlighting resident concerns
about pedestrian and cyclist safety
on a narrow road where many tes-
idents are forced to park on the
street due to lack of driveway ac-
cess.

Residents hope to vain council
support for the construction of
sidewalks, restricted parking regu-
lations, road widening at two
blind corners, street lighting and
improved signage, gtrardrails and
drainage.

Silkalns said that residents
would accept grave! or blacktop
sidewalks of 18 inches in width
just to provide ‘‘pedestrian refuge
~— a place to go and get off the
road,””

A NORTH Vancouver” woman’s
wish came true recently when she
won a car after purchasing a Pro-
vincial Bonus lottery ticket.

Gloria Muzzin, a mother of
three, won her choice of a
Chrysler.

Muzzin and her husband,
Maurizio, purchased the ticket
during their weekly shopping trip
at the Lonsdale Quay market.

““} always stop and buy a few
Instants,’’ said Muzzin. ‘I was
buying an Instant ticket and
remembered hearing the Provin-
cial commercial about cars. I real-
ly wanted a new car, so | bought
aticket.”’

While waiting for her husband
to come back with their coffees,
Muzzin sat down and scratched
the instant play area on her $5
Provincial lottery ticket. She mat-
ched three ‘‘car/auto'’ symbols on
the Instant Bonus play area on the
bottom portion of her ticket.

“F go crazy when 1 scratch,’
said Muzzin. ‘My husband always
laughs at me because I get so in-
volved. 1 didn’t really believe 1
had won.

“} put my glasses on and still
didn’t believe it. My face went all
red. I said to my husband: ‘f
think I won a car.’ ””

Muzzin and her husband plan-
ned to keep the prize a secret
from their three daughters.

“TI wasn’t going to tell my
daughters until I had the car. I
thought it would be nice to drive
up and surprise them in a new
car,” she said. “But 1 couldn’t
hold it in.’”

The couple, who didn’t know
that they could teke the $40,000
cash equivalent until they claimed
their prize, had planned on taking
the car.

“Now that { know 1 can take
the cash I’ve decided to take the
money and buy a second-hand car
