Just after | turn off my motor it ‘‘jumps’’ a
bit. What does this mean?

“‘Dieseling’’ is the term most mechanics would use
A. to describe this problem. The engine continues to run
for a short period of time after the ignition (which sparks
combustion inside the engine’s combustion chamber) is
switched off.

There are a wide variety of possible causes for this condi-
tion, but high idle speed is the most common and generally
the easiest to correct.

If your car has an in-dash tachometer (RPM gauge) you
can check the idle speed yourself by comparing the tach’s
idle speed reading with the specified idle speed on the emis-
sion controi decal under the hood. High idle speeds may
just be a simple adjustment but can also be caused by stick-
ing throttle or choke linkages, a defective idle solenoid or
air leaks in the intake system.

*‘Dieseling’? can also be caused by more obscure reasons
such as engine over-heating, incorrect ignition timing, an
incorrect idle fuel mixture, electrical faults in the ignition
system or carbon build-up inside the combustion chambers.

Do it up right

THE INSURANCE Corporation
of British Columbia (ICBC) and
the Ministry of Solicitor General
are saying, ‘Don’t just do it, do it
up right!’

That’s the theme behind their
1990 provincial Safety Belt Cam-
paign running throughout B.C.
until June 17.

Studies have shown that B.C.’s
safety belt wearing is among the
highest in the country. However,
there is evidence that a lot of peo-
ple are not wearing their safety
restrainis properly, drastically
reducing their effectiveness.

The Do It Up Right, B.C. cam-
paign aims to correct common
safety belt wearing mistakes,
thereby increasing the safety of
people on the road.

“I believe British Columbians
are buckling up not just because
it’s the law, but because they
sincerely want to take responsibili-
ty for their own safety, as well as
the safety of their families and
their friends,’’ reports Bill Hub-
bard, manager of ICBC’s Traffic

Safety Education Department.

“*That’s why our Do It Up Right
campaign is so important. It will
help people correct mistakes they
unknowingly make when buckling
up, and show them how to reduce
severe injuries cuased by traffic
accidents.’

Some of the common errors ad-
dressed by the campaign include:

* loosely worn lap and shoulder
belts,

® shoulder belts worn under the
arm,

© Jap belts worn high over the ab-
domen,

*infants or children loosely
buckled into car seats, and

® untethered forward-facing child
safety seats.

Campaign messages will be
communicated through posters,
handouts, the mass media as well
as community activities, such as
child car safety seat checks.
