Just last week, he passed away, on the eve of the very last panel thar he produced. His passage is a great loss for kids and aduits alike. For over 50 vears Shultz managed to capture the essence of child. hood frustranon in Charke Brown, the wisdom of per- spective in Snoopy, the inno- cence of vouth in, Linus, the precociousness of intellect in Lucy and a variety of evervday characteristics in other figures who came and went from time to dime. We all identified with someone in Schulz's work eventually. Asa teacher and adminis- trator determined to add a lit- de levity to some of life’s chal- lenges berween youth and par- ents, I have a thick file of vel- lowed Peanuts clippings span- ning over twenty years. Rarelv was P net able to find one. OF course, as an educator, one of Schulz’s latest charac- ters, Marcie, became a favourite. Her attempts to beat the school system and out smart her teacher, rarely suc cessfiil, never ceased to hit the nail on the head for half the students in any class at any time. As hopeless as her efforts were to find a short-cut, she never ceased to maintain the hope of students everywhere that there was some other way to be successful other than by simply studying. In my classes. she relieved a lot of anxiety during exami time. Schulz had a rare witt: the Stulity to see the world through the eves of 2 child, long atter he had lett chitd- hood himself. No doubt his cartoons were Meant as muh for adults as tor the children, reminding us with childlike simplicity of the things that really mattered in lite. Charlie taught generabens ordoubtrul kids to hang in there even when the vomg got tough, Snoopy taught evens one to respect the ditferences oi others, through his toler- ance and acceptance of Voodstock and his ramily. Lucy taught us to question things and not to accept trite information as fact. Lirius and his blanket taught us about loyaley and Pigpen caught us that we shouldn't judge others by their appearance. ‘There were lessons too NuMeEroUs to mention, too deep ta ignore Skinless.
