Be honest about chan My young friend was crying a bit as she said: “I'm ashamed of myself: It’s like I'm a traitor to my own mother and father. They are so sincere and dedicated to what they believe and now even though they did everything in the world to pass on to me what they stand for, here J am, their daughter, finding I can no longer hold to what I was taught. I feel like I'm letting down the team.” I asked her if her parents taught her to be honest. She smiled, wistfully and = an- swered, “Did they ever! It was ternbly important to them for me to be honest about everything. Why did you ask that?” I told her | had just . her, assumed they would be keen on truthfulness and was wondering if she felt they would want her, now, to be dishonest about her changing beliefs. She hesitated, but said she was sure they would not want her to be dishonest. We saw, together that they were trying to teach first of all, to BE a certain kind of person. The “creed” they taught here, although very important to them, was really secondary to the quality of life they wanted for her. She saw that by sticking to the “creed” (but setting aside her in- tegrity) she would certainly be letting down the team in an area of experience that is of utmost importance to her folk and of paramount importance to herself. As she was leaving the office, I remembered from highschool memorization days. “To thine own self be true and it follows as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” If we were together in the same room, I think I could win a bet with you. I'd bet that there's something you've been putting off and putting off and putting off. And I'd also bet that each lume you put it off, it gets harder to NOT put it off anymore. Right? Harder and harder it gets. So? So do it now — today — and give me credit for A showcase for jazz FROM PAGE C1 Jazz Band at the recent New Westminster Jazz Festival.
