The Boomtang oys | doth > sides now & The Boomtang Boys Greatest Hits Vol. One (Virgin 2434-94299-2), John Goodman This Week Editor jolng@nsnews.com AFTER a decade of taking apart and rebuilding songs for other artists the Soomiang Boys know how to make hit records. The Grace brothers Tony and Paul began | their own label in 1989, re singles cn Fun Wow, be fore forming Boomrang Records with Rob DeBoer in 191. Day jobs paid for the gear they needed to create their own studio in Toroate. In 1995 the production team won the Juno Award for Best Dance Recording with Camille's Deeper Shade of Love and picked up another nomi- nation in the Best R&B/Soul album category with Charlene Smith’s Feel The Good Times. They've spent the latter part of the decade honing their skills with remixes for Econoline Crush, Bif Naked and Corey Hart among others. Tony Grace describes their production approach as a push/pull technique. “When you're recording a lot you build up layers and layers « of clements in a track,” says the Toronto musician. “Eventually you have to give it some dynamic. And you do that by subtraction, by taking out parts. Taking the rhythm track out at certain points to lift the chorus a bit more and When Be vomntang fit erated berween harde started remixing they underground house (Contemporary Hit Racho) albuni v s. ended up they started using the CHR mix much more,” says Grace. “That changed the way we renux, We have aur eats more to the radio side of things now because we know that our major clients are coming to us to get their artists on to CHR stations. We have a different mandate than we had four vears ago.” With the renix business booming the tio decided to take the next step and signed a multi-record deal with Virgin Records in 1998. ‘This gives them the best of both worlds — they van devel- op artists on their own label and use the powerful reach of Virgin to get the material heard. The first albu new deal Greatest One came out cartier this month. While the CD is a showcase for the Boomrang Boys writing and production skills they also bring some of their favourite vocalists into the spotlight with them. They inclade singers the team has worked with in the past such as Kim Esty and Kim: Wermore as well as newcomers like Emese Zaduban and X’unia (Sharon Smith). Tony Grace discovered Zaduban in a choir while he was recording the group for a friend. “The conductor's daughter was there and | heard her warming up in the corner. She was perfect.” The 20-year-old performs on 2 cover See Boomtang Page 27 ce none mem mew this COUPON it ain reeeive a comalimentary CAR donate #3 for every 627 © ry oo wa HAPPY HOUR spestals, Every Mon.-Fit, from 2-4 PAY, téion.
