Tropical trip
no holiday
for physician

WV doctor ran Sudan clinics

DR. David Wilson was
knecling on a dirt path
trying to sew up a
boy’s leg, which a dog
had sunk its teeth into.

‘> “He'd been badly bitten. It
was nighttime and I was work-
ing by a kerosene lamp.”

The mosquitoes were
vicious, making it difficult to
focus on the task at hand.

The boy’s family quickly
cut and gathered branches
from nearby trees and began
to gently beat Wilson as he sat
on the ground, to keep the
“mosquitoes at bay.

'  #it was really quite a sight
to see.... me sitting on the
ground trying to bring the
parts of his leg closer together,
and all of them gently beating
me with these branches.”

Sans Frontieres (MSF) —
Doctors Without Borders.

The experience, from mid-
June to mid-August, was a
long way from — West
Vancouver, where the 43-vear-
old has both his home and his
obstetrics-focused family prac-
tice.

His assignment in Africa
was to oversee nwo health clin-
ics in the communities of Le
and Lankien, where loca! staff
have been trained by MSF to
treat tuberculosis and the
tropical disease kala azar.

He also treated villagers for
everything from malaria, snake
bites, and war wounds —
including a year-old bullet
wound that hadn’t healed

roperly — to leprosy.
