Council agreed Monday to apply an across-the-board 3.2% tax inci ease to each prop- erty class. That translates approximately to a $40 tax increase for an average home assessed at $332,000. Since 1984, B.C. munici- palities have levied property taxes using a variable tax rate systein. This requires a munic- ipality to set a separate tax rate tor cach class of property While the rate of taxation varies for each class, with industrial land contributing 3 larger proportion of tax rev- enue, the same increase will be applied to cach rate class. The classes within the dis- trict are: residential, business, major industrial, light industri- al, utility and recreational. In 1996 the NDP provin- cial government capped the utility class tax rate at $40.59 per $1,000 of taxable assess- ment. In the same year the dis- trict’s utility tax rate was $46.28 per $1,000. The change, and its result- ing loss of revenue te the dis- ict, was applied by the ¢ along with a reduc- tion in railway taxation. The district pays an extra $1.5 mil- lion this year courtesy of the province. — Martin Milferchip + Ok, picture this: the warm morning sun “blazing high in the alpine sky, soft- packed snow giving way easily beneath your feet, fresh mountain oir giving you energy with every breath, and views stretching into elernity.
