Much has been said about the
eroticism (“uncut and unrated”),
but frankly the sight of a couple

about the linoleum (tastefully
cioaking the naughty bits) is ini-
tially comical, then boring.

clumsy, but with-a dangerous

This is an elegant exception,
carefully made by Dr. Cosimo
Taurino. The big blackberryish
fruit is all there, impressively con-
centrated, but kept under contro!
by Taurino’s method of giving it
six months in small oak casks to
simmer down.

Matched against a good Chianti,
this wine easily holds its own.
Unique and a bargain.

“Atomovision,” Goodman is the
best thing in this otherwise dull,
funbling movie.

The real focus is on a lonely
teenager, Gene Loomis {Simon
Fenton) and other cardboard
characters who are only. slightly
more real than the people lam-
pooned in ‘Mant.’

In. fact, the movie-within-a-
movie is such an amusing spoof,

Prior to Life is Sweet, Mike Leigh
was an obscure director af even
more obscure films. This 1977
video of 2 London play shows that
his ttlent has been going unnolic-
ed for far too long.

Leigh’s wife Alison Steadman
stare as Beverly, a seli-absorbed
suburbanite whose party for new
neighbors ends in well-
foreshadowed disaster. It's a ter-
tific performance, a nasal “‘uh-
yuh’ lagging the end of every
other sentence and hec dubious
concep! of good hosting by aver-
serving her guests until they are ei-
ther sick or enraged.

She’s as hideous and hilarious as
the cast’s ‘70s wardrobe.
