By following an annual schedule, you will spread the work out while completing all those small jobs that contribute to comfort and energy savings. As well, you will maintain the structure of your house in good condition, and avoid costly repair bills in the future. Here is a calendar of energy- saving steps to take thoughout the year. SPRING @ Check and possibly upgrade insulation in the attic, before summer heat sets in. Don’t forget to draftproof leaks into the attic, install an air-vapor barrier and weatherstrip the attic hatch. @ Plant trees on the south and west sides of your house for summer shade. Also plant a windbreak of trees or shrubs on the windward side of the house. @ Have your air conditioner ser- viced to be sure it is operating ef- ficiently. @® At the end of spring, open crawl space vents. SUMMER © Undertake major energy effi- cient renovation projects that will involve opening your house to the elements, such as upgrading or replacing windows. @ Repair leaky foundations from the outside by digging a trench along the wall and putting in an adequate drainage system. If your basement is uninsulated, install insulation on the outside of the wall before filling in the trench. e@ Turn off your water heater during vacations. @ Keep curtains or blinds closed on south- and west-facing win- dows during the day to cool! the house and lower air conditioning costs. FALL @ if you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, have the chimney cleaned. Ensure that the top of your furnace flue pipe is clear of debris. @ Cut and stack firewood for next year’s burning, allcwing six to 12 months’ drying time. @ Have your furnace serviced. @ On a windy day, check for air feaks around doors and windows, the sill plate and the attic. Caulk and weatherstrip these areas as required. @ Make sure a clean air filter is installed in forced air furnaces. Carefully dust and vacuum baseboard heaters in hydronic and electric heating systems. @ Install storm doors and win- dows. . @ Insulate long runs of hot water pipe, especially in coo! basements or crawl spaces. @cCheck cautking and weatherstripping throughout the house to ensure that seals are stiil effective. @ Close crawl space vents for the winter. WINTER @ Install an automatic set-back thermostat, or regularly turn the thermostat down to 17°C at night and up to 20°C during the day. Use the lower setting if no one is home during the day. @ Once a month, clean or replace the air filter in forced air fur- naces, and carefully dust and vacuum baseboard heaters. @ Check your attic for excess condensation (water, frost or ice on building materials). Draftproof these cracks with caulking, and improve the home’s ventilation system. Also check for openings in the roof, and clean debris out of attic vents. @ Seal your furnace ductwork with duct tape and insulate hot air PARKIN WOODWARDS ~ PARKADE. we PAY DESCRIPTION Persian Tribal Persian Shiraz Bokhara Pakistan Persian Hamadan Chinese Parsian Tabriz Chinesa Super 90_ #8 WATER STREET, GASTOWN (across from Spaghetti Factory) HOURS: MONDAY - SATURDAY 10 - 7 P.M. * SUNDAY 11 - 6 P.M. 681-6440 ducts that pass through unheated spaces.
