Keep poisonous plants
out of children’s reach

DANGEROUS AND bothersome
poisonous plants surround us every
day of our lives.

Seldom is a poisonous plant out
of reach. These plants can grow
wild but are often carefully
cultivated as ornamentals; we plant
them in our gardens and pick them
in our fields and forests.

For young children, plants are
high on the Lst of accidental
poisonings. By keeping piants out
of children’s reack and teaching
children at an early age not to nib-
ble any plant or berry not com-
monly used as food, you can
reduce the chance of poisoning.

Adults, too, should avoid mak-
ing ‘‘medicinal’’? concoctions from
plants and chewing on plant stems.
Remember, children learn by what
they see.

Plants should be labelled with
their common names. Make a
point to learn the name of each
plant that you buy and keep that
information with the plant. A
plastic stick often comes with the
plant name printed on it. If not,
write the plant name on a wooden
stick and put it in the soil. Having
the plant name handy can save
