Chesa food praised From page 23 vide a full meal. Chesa’s wine list is small. . Bottles range from $14 to $20, with some reasonable selections available. Table Hopping staff, feeling ina jug wine mood, tried a ¥% litre of Sebastiani Burgundy ($8.50), which was quite congenial for the price. Service at Chesa is swift, and the second incarnation of the Chesa seafood offspring of the original Chesa is re-establishing itself as a favorite among locals. Chesa’s bread plate provided in- itial indication that the restaurant prefers to leave well-slagged culi- nary trails to less imaginative kitchens: warm banana bread ac- companied fresh crusty French. Also sampled in the opening round was a special Smoked Fish Plate ($5.95), which was very good, Colorfully appointed, it provided a good range of food flavors and textures, with slices of smoked salmon and trout alternating atop butter lettuce and a soya sauce and Balsamic vinegar vinaigrette. The salad was framed by pale yellow endive, two chilled prawns over tamb leituce covered in fresh chopped peppers, a leaf of red radicchio and a central eye of purple onion. It was as refreshing as it was in- teresting. Restrained use of dress- ing allowed the subtle smoked salmon and trout flavors to speak for themselves. Entrees sampled: Prawns in a Pernod-flavorest herb sauce ($9.95 for main course size) and Maui Ribs ($7.95). Acentral vegetable plate for the table included two baked tomato halves with pureed sweet potato centres, snow peas and baked potatoes carved into mushroom shapes. A side of shoe-string French fried potatoes came with the ribs. The prawn dish included a dozen medium-size, sweet prawns in a cream Pernod combination with blackened sesame seeds sprinkled atop and garnished with a lace of purple onions. Prawns always do well by Per- nod, and the addition of chopped peppers added extra visual and saporous appeal — a simple, classic dish for seafood and good food fans alike. . The ribs provided good food value for the money: three layers of beef ribs, somewhat fatty, but with overt teriyaki-style flavors of garlic, soya sauce, ginger and fresh cracked black pepper, which might be a touch loud for the diner with a more subtle palate. They came garnished with a sprig of endive and slices of can- taloupe and orange. For dessert we tried a special crepe stuffed with chopped can- taloupe and strawberry ($4.95), which was decorated with a pink strawberry mousse, bright yellow - peach coulis, cassis hearts and a sprig of red mini. It provided a light and refreshing note upon which to finish. Chesa Seafoed and Grillis well worth a visit for seafood and just plain food aficionados — reasonably priced and artistically presented fresh food from land and sea.
