R - Wednesday, March 9, TORR - North Shore News LEARNING DISABILITIES WEEK Invisible handicap made visible THE INVISIBLE handicap is visible this week thanks to the efforts of the Learning Disabilities Association of British Columbia (LDABC) and community leaders during Lear- ning Disabilities Week. The LDABC is a voluntary, non-profit: organization providing information, support and tesources (o people with learning disabilities and to those associated with them. West Vancouver Secondary School will be presenting a profes- sional development workshop on teaching the learning disabled to parents and teachers March 11 at the school from 7:30 a.m. to ! p.m, By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter Seminar topics to.be covered in- clude Attention Deficit Disorders, Identification of the Learning Disabled in the Secondary School, On Being Learning Lisabled and Living with the Learning Disabled. About 10 to 15 per cent of the population suffer from some form of learning disability, and approx- imately 50,000 school-age children and 30,000 young adults are af- fected in the province. Judy Webb is the president of the North Vancouver: chapter of the LDABC, The chapter has recently been re-activated. Webb became invelved with the associa- tion for support in dealing with a learning-disabled daughter. One of the chapter's activities is to provide parent support. “What happens from a parent's perspec- tive is that it’s not an easy thing to identify. As a parent, my first need was to find out what wis wrong with my child,’’ she said. | Trudy Hodges, treasurer of the West Vancouver LDABC chapter, has four learning disabled children who are just about through the West) Vancouver school system. “We want to work together with the teachers and administrators to improve what's available for the kids coming up,”" she said. Due to difficulties in processing information, childien and adults with learning disabilities have often been labelled failures.
