Careless use of flammable li- quids is ene cause for kitchen fires and the kitchen is also the location of most scald burns. According to the statistics com- piled by the Office of the Fire Marshall (Ontario), the most common stove fire involves the placement of flammable items on or right next to the stove, Here are some tips on preventing kitchen fires and scald burns: ® Do not set grocery bags on the burners. © When cooking always turn pot handles away from the front edge of the stove. COOKING OIL © Do not pre-heat the frying pan or cooking oil and walk away unless the burner is turned off and the pan moved to a cool burner. If the broiler tray catches fire, turn off broiler switch, close the oven door, and the flames should go out. If they don’t, throw 2 cup or two of baking soda right on the burning meat in the broiler. This won’t harm the meat. elf the oven (and broiler tray) needs cleaning — don't cook in it! Cleaning the oven (probably every six months) will save a major clean-up job or possibly the price of replacing the kitchen, the whole house and everything in it. SCALD BURNS The kitchen is also the site of thousands of scald burns every year. They are usually caused through poor judgment, carelessness, or inattention. The hot water faucet is at fault in some instances, oven or stove-top cook- ing in others, and a simple cup of coffee or tea may be another cause. In the event of a scald, plunge the burned area in standing cool water, Do not rub ice over the burn, and do not put the burn under running cool water. After the burn kas cooled down, cover it with a clean dry towel or sheet, and obtain medical atten- tion. If the burn is extremely serious, cover it with a clean sheet and call for emergency aid im- mediately.
