Persons wishing to take their in- come tax form and tax slips, in order to ask questions, can do so. . Counsellors have found in the past that many seniors are not always aware of all the deductions due them, or how to use the pro- cedures for transfers from spouses, ., installment programs and other ; exemptions. _ One of the changes which has offered taken place for the 1988 returns is that the $1000 investment income deduction, which includes any bank interest, has been eliminated for everyone. Seniors will also be warned that among other things to watch for are interest payments in the latest Canada Savings bonds which came due and especially those who had compound bonds when the interest rate was 19% per cent. Such a high rate of interest adds up con- siderably. Deductions are now termed ‘credits’ which will also be new to those who attempt to make out their own returns. Counsellors like Schmalz say it is not as difficult as it seems and she, as well as the other speakers, will give step by step information on how to file your return at the three lectures. For low-income handicapped persons who are unable to get out, North Shore volunteers will make home visits to assist with tax returns. Whether attending the lectures or having a home visit, seniors are advised to have their income tax forms with them, along with all tax slips, and their copy of the 1987 tax return. The. word from the special counsellors is that in spite of a few new regulations, the forms are not that difficult to fill out with some help. Al! the counsellors will have been instructed . by Revenue - Canada and ‘will be prepared to answer all seniors’ queries. - The North: Shore information and Volunteer, Centre, located at 1060 Roosevelt Crescent, North SENIORS ~ CALENDAR | The } ‘Following events sre sponsored by the West Vancouver Seniors Activity Centre, 695 21st St. For information on becoming a member of the centre, call 926-4318. . ! Seniors’ housing co-op proposed ‘Amen Amen! | A NON-PROFIT Seniors’ Housing Co-op is being proposed for a site currently owned: by the West Vancouver Baptist Church. Tri Power Properties Ltd., has entered into an interim agreement to purchase the 1.55 acre site, if and when they succeed in getting the land rezoned to higher density residential. The plan is to build a 66 unit co-op. “The church is not involved in the development, although we would like to see people in our congregation considered for occupancy when the units go up for sale,’’ the church’s Development Commission Chairman Ed Carr told the Villager. The sale of the land will also help West Vancouver Baptist Church fi- nance their own development scheme —a two-storey extension to the church facility. The 1.55 acres is the surplus of the land purchased about four years ago to provide parking for the church extension.
