8 - Sunday, December 7, 1986 ~- North Shore News Teachers give computer input NORTH VANCOUVER was one of the most enthusiastic school districts to offer input to the Ministry of Education’s Provincial Advisory Committee on Computers, says local computer teacher Stewart Lynch. He said when the committee visited here last week 50 teachers attended a public meeting, and eight formal briefs were presented, He said one of the main recom- mendations teachers made to the committee was that any formal policy the ministry enacts must be supported by funding. The 14-member committee is visiting school districts throughout the province to gather information and ideas on how computer tech- nology should be integrated into B.C, scticals. While visiting North Vancouver, the committee heard from repre- sentatives from the district’s Music Education department, Secondary Computer and Science program, School Libraries and Resource Centres, Special Education, Elementary School Computer Ap- plivations, Industrial Education, Act Education and Home Economics, The following are some of the recommendations made by jocal teachers. *Any policy statement should be flexible enough to deal with tech- nological change. *Funds should be made available for school districts to purchase and develop good, educational software. eMinimal standards for com. puter hardware that will support good instructional software should be set. eThe location of computer laboratories in schools should be addressed, and lab managers should be appointed. *Provide in-service computer training (o teachers. *Standardize commuter ware and software in districts. *Support and encourage the ar- tistic and creative applications of computers, hard- school The committee, which was formed in July, wili hear pres- entations from major hardware and software computer vendors in January before bringing its report forward.
