te - Wedaesday, March 32, 1986 - North Shore News ITV tutors} help NV school students NORTH Vancouver School District’s first stroll into television productions has been an unqualified success. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter When Homework Helper made its Cable tO premiere Feb. 26., phone lines were jammed with some 120 calls over the show's two-hour call-in period, according to the show’s producer Dr. Doug Ledgerwoad. ‘We're meeting a real need,’’ he said. Homework Helper utilizes the modern fixation with video and television to help students solve math and English problems. FIELDING QUESTIONS Though the show, which runs Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. on Cable 10, is aimed at math and English students in grades six to 10, Homework Helper teachers field questions from anyone who calls in. Thus far nine teachers, all from District 44, have volunteered their time to answer phones and appear on the Cabie 10 production. Main impetus for their involve- ment, according to Ledgerwood, is simple: ‘‘They want to help kids with their problems, and they see this as an ideal way to reach out beyond the classroom.°’ “They're amazing really,’’ Ledgerwood said. ‘‘None of them have done television work before, but each comes off like an old TV pro.”” HIGH-PROFILE High-profile guest hosts, such as Terry David Mulligan, are being scheduled for each Homework Helper program. Phone calls for the show are handled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday. In the opening two episodes those calls have come from a wide cross-section of both North Shore student and parent populetions, Ledgerwood said. ‘Students have called in from all over the North Shore, from West Vancouver, from Coll- ingwood private school, everywhere. And not just from students, we get a lot of calls from people out of school, adults who are interested in avoiding a dangl- ing participle or in bisecting an angle.”’ Production costs of Homework Helper are ‘‘embarrassingly small,’’ according to Ledgerwood. “Ics virtually cost free. The peo- ple at Cable 10 have been super.” INITIAL SUCCESS Homework Helper is the first production of its kind in B.C. Its initial success in math and English has prompted Ledgerwood to con- sider expansion of the format to include sciences. Success of the show, Ledger- wood said, lies in the obvious need it fills and the desire of the current generation to achieve. “Kids today are pretty serious, sometimes too serious. They see their brothers and sisters unem- ployed; they want to achieve; they have their noses to the grind- stone.”” AZ Ron Za&e Workout, B Beainner, FIA.
