Computers streamline medicine

MODERN MEDICINE has
learned to harness the micro-
chip. Research, diagnostics
and treatment procedures
have all benefitted from com-
puter technology. Now com.
puters may become as in-
dispensible in the individual
medical practice as the
tamiliar stethoscope.

A computer in every doc-
tor's office may be the
answer to the ever-increasing
paperwork load associated
with private practice — an
administrative burden that
can interfere with the time
doctors and staff have
available for patients’ needs

Computerization can only
improve the doctor’patient
relauionship, according to
M.D. Brian Spencer. He ts
one of a group of British Col-
umbia physicrans who has
worked with Osler Software
Research Inc. to develop a
software system designed
specifically for B.C. doctors.

Called ‘'Practice
Manager,’’ the system
handles such functions as ap-
pointment scheduling and
billing, allowing doctors and

less ume on administration.

Spencer's interest in the
possibiliues of computerizing
the medical practice began
several years ago when he
went looking fort a system to
fit the needs of his own of-
fice He couldn't find one
that offered the capabilities
he needed, so became involv.
ed in developing one with the
help ot Dale Wershler &
Associates, software
designers.

“We're also developing a
medical records system, in
cluding a facet which will
help us keep better tabs on
patients’ problems,’” says Dr
Dale Nicoll, another member
of the Osler team
