Shore candidates A SURVEY by the anti-nuclear group the Elec- tion Priorties project, shows a general agreement among federal election candidates on the need for arms control. The Election Priorities Project comprises a number of organizations ranging from OXFAM and the Unit- ed Church to Operation Dismantie. The results of their survey: THE QUESTIONS The survey, given to all candidates, had background information on 12 questions. Candidates were asked if they supported efforts to reduce military budgets, in- creased aid to poor coun- tries, taking a stand against military intervention by the superpowers, the establish- ment of an_ international arms trade registry, a full disclosure of Canada’s mili- tary exports, efforts to con- vert military to non-military industrial production, the cancellation of Cruise missile testing in Canada, the dec- laration of Canada as a nu- clear weapon free zone, a bi- lateral freeze on nuclear weapons testing and produc- tion, a ‘‘no first use’’ posi- tion on the use of nuclear weapons by NATO, an in- creased role for Canada as a peace-keeper and a global referendum on nuclear disarmanent. NORTH VAN-BURNABY David Schreck of the NDP, Betty Nickerson of the Green Party and Reg Walters of the Communist Party supported all of the EPP’s statements. Liberal candidate lona Campagnolo rejected the idea of an international arms trade register and the cancellation of the federal Defence Industry Productivi- ty Program and the conver- sion of military industrial production to non-miliatry production. Conservative candidate Chuck Cook, meanwhile, also rejected the conversion of industrial production but did support an arms trade registry. He offered no opinion onthe Parlimanetrians for World Order, the conversion of mil- itary production or increased development assistance to governments committed to meeting the basic rights and needs of their citizens.
