KING ANNUITIES ARE not universally understood and since they are useful and, in many cases, desirable things, I think it may be of interest to describe the different kinds that are available. An annuity provides for a systematic liquidation of a sum of money, plus the earn- ings on the money, through regular (usually monthly or annual) payments to the an- nuitant (the recipient of an- nuity payments). The amount payments is substantially greater than would be generated by interest on the same amount of capital; the drawback, of course, is that all the money gets used up, whereas taking interest leaves the capital intact. There are several responses to this: (a) you can’t take it with you, (b) interest alone may not be enough to live on comfor- tably, and (c) annuity ar- rangements make it possible to contract for the return to beneficiaries of unused capital if the annuitant dies within a specified period ... usually ten or fifteen years, but other terms are available. In the case of (c) above, the amount of the annuity payments is reduced but they do continue over the annui- tant’s lifetime. There are an- huities which pay out over a of annuity period of time and then cease; these are Annuities Certain. They aren’t as popular as annuities that last for a lifetime. Obviously the way to get annuity payments started is to plunk down a sum of money and wait for the che- ques to start coming. The an- nuity purchased this way is called an Immediate Annui- ty. Another way is to an- ticipate the need — or wish for — annuity payments to Start sometime in the future; in this case you put money in- to a Deferred Annuity to ac- CONTINUED ON PAGE B6 TAX PLANNING SEMINARS Tax Planning ‘83 Exclusively for members of North Shore Community Credit Union For West Vancouver members Time: Nov 3 6:30-9:00pm For North Vancouver members Time: Nov 10 7:30-9:30pm Place: Lynn Valley Library 1280 East 27th St., NLV.
