baby girl born underwater in
a sterilized horsetrough and
kept submerged eight
minutes was “doing really
fine” Tuesday, her father
said.

“Everything is really fine

ith the mother and the
baby and the whole family is
real happy,” said Bill
Rodgers, father of the ninth
child delivered in the United
States by a controversial bir-
thing method pioneered in
the Soviet Union.
The child is healthy and
there have been no com-
plications since her birth last
month, he said.

Rodgers and a midwife
assisted in the delivery. His
wife, Marilyn, began prepar-
ing several months ago for
the birth.

Seven-pound Merlinna
was born while-"Mrs. Rodgers
was partially submerged in a
tank of 100 degree water,
allowing the infant to breath
through her mother’s um-
bilical cord eight minutes
before quietly surfacing in
the tank.

Rodgers said his wife had
a premature son four years
ago in a traumatic birth that
required the boy to stay
seven months in the hospital

then he said they had studied
every form of alternative
birth they could find.

“There’s not anything
wrong with hospitals,”
Rodgers said. “We just
wanted alternative methods
and decided to use the
underwater birthing to
reduce the fear and ease the
birth,” said Rodgers.

He said his wife was in the
tank about three hours with
water heated from 99-101
degrees and salt added to the
water to duplicate the condi-
tions in the womb.
