TEHRAN, Iran (UPI) - Iran charged that two American jets Tuesday fired on an Iranian naval patrol plane in the strategic Strait of Hor- muz. The Pentagon said two F-14s intercepted an Iranian C-130 when it approached within 50 miles of the aircraft carrier Nimitz but no weapons were fired. The Joint Command of Iran's Armed Forces said in a communique the “attack” was repulsed by four lranmian air force Iran accuses the US of aggression planes, which took off from the Bandar Abbas base to aid the aircraft under fire. It said the naval patrol aircraft was “fired on” by the two American F-14 jets. The Pentagon said, “Two F-14 aircraft from the Nimitz made a routine intercept of an Iranian C- 130 aircraft’ near the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. aircraft escorted the Iranian plane back to Iranian air space. There was no firing of weapons.” FROM PAGE A1 said: “We can be pleased that in these times of rising labor and material costs the total moneys needed for services to persons and property has been kept down to an increase of 10.9 per cent in the average taxes, which compares to almost exactly the increase in the consumer price index.” West Van residents, he added, had said through their opinion poll returns, their ratepayers organizations and_ their elected representatives that they wanted their quality and level of service and protection maintained. Humphreys told council the provincial government had not yet agreed to pay municipalities with their own police departments the same subsidy as is enjoyed by interest rates and increased labor and fringe benefit costs,” declared Humphreys, “it is not possible to avoid this less-than-average budget increase of 10.9 per cent without reducing the ser- vices and protection to persons and property below that expected by the residents of West Van- couver. SCHOOLS TAX JUMP The $15,934,957 gross schools budget for 1980, also approved Monday night by West Vancouver School Board, represents an 8.2 per cent increase over last year’s figure of $14,727,972. Total school taxes for the current year, however, will be $12,830,404 -- up by 12.6 per cent from total 1979 school taxes of $11,397,306. School board Secretary- Treasurer John Cassey told A contributory factor in the budget increase, Cassey noted, was a lower per- centage contribution by the provincial government — down this year to 13.5 per cent compared to about 19 per cent in 1979. Meanwhile, West Van school enrolment has dropped a further 2.3 per cent from the previous school year. Enrolment in September 1979 was 6,250 as against 6,400 in the previous June.
