Beneath the bright... unreal colors of a Saturday [ f
morning kid's show is a way. of dealing significantly with 5. . pee '
some of the emotional. distress of childhood. ‘Godzilla § - ‘channel “Gable -
Super: 90" gives children emotional support in the form §. a . oo Pp
of hope when one appears to be trapped, victory even § . . ae ; - ae _
for the .most helpless. character, and: other: subtle 7. . aa oe
reassurances which leave the child better able to meet j
the tasks of reality. re tl

in addition to the giant reptile Godzilla, the animated f[
series presents the adventures of Johnny Quest and his |
scientist-father and segments featuring Jana -of the §
Jungle. These adventures are fairy tales of a sort. Fairy §
tales are ancient and cherished for their ability to help. §
youngsters master the problems of growing up. ;

J.R.R. Tolkien. author of the epic Lord of the Rings,
described the necessary elements tn a good fairy tale as
fantasy. recovery..escape and, most of all. consolation.
The reader or viewer of a tale identifies with the main
character and how he or she copes, step by step. with
difficult situations. Many basic characteristics of fairy tales
are evident in the Godzilla stories. =. a _

In a fairy tale evil is as omnipresent as virtue; and
the struggle against it provides suspense. Within the first
ten minutes of one typical. Jana episode the dilemma is}
unveiled: angry. Indian. tribesmen abandon foreign silver §
miners who become trapped and vulnerable to. an erupting @  ..
voicano. Jana rushes to help and falls into a raging river: |
but is able to climb to safety. The message comes across §
that struggle. is unavoidable; but recovery from its despair 9 - —
is won. through perseverence...9°0

Amidst. all the action, danger and adventures, there |
1 is comfort. that-justice is being done.-Not only do the |
_previousiy trapped. miners reach safety, but. the indian 5

chief admits he was wrong when he tried to abandon
them. Seeing someone admit a mistake can be very
satisfying to a child, who has so many. conflicts of his.
own. . oo . woe. = ee
Tales of this sort are necessarily trite because 9. -
complex plots and themes may confuse a child.. The: )
element of fantasy is seen when Jana enlists: the aid of.
all her animal friends, calling them in their own language. :
in the cartoon world, it is not unbelievable or inconsistent
for an eagle to bring help and, ultimately, freedom.

Nothing is more consoling than a happy ending, §
inspiring confident expectation in the young person. The .
miners exclaim together, “We're free!,"” and go to a
celebration with Jana and the repentent Indian tribe. This
quality of consolation underlines the fairy tale nature of .

A parent viewing this show with a child might further
assure the young person that the enjoyment of fantasy
is not a weakness, that, in fact, it is worthwhile. The value -
of fairy tales and of programs like this rests in their.
inherent morality. The simple good-vs.-bad conflicts
encourage the child to make choices which the parent.
can discuss and influence. | .

Godzilla is a fantastic monster, but nevertheless a real
source of reassurance to a young viewer. .
