Memorial service for former News staffer WILLIAM MCGOWN, a for- mer director of adult education for North Vancouver as well as director of circulation and company liaison officer with the North Shore News. died suddenly on May 10. “He was quite quiet but friendly and always had a nice word for everyone.” said News classified manager Val Stephenson, who was hired by Mr. McGown in the 1980s. ~ Mr. McGown served tn the Navy from 1942-46, He then joined the North Vancouver school board as tant director, and then director, of adult education for North and West Vancouver. He retired from the school board position in 1983. The following week he began at the News, where he worked for five years. “He was here at a time when the North Shore News was going through a lot of changes and he was a very steadying factor who held everything together,” Stephenson recalled.
