Seycove student

wins scholarship

A NORTH VANCOUVER
student who achieved
superior scholastic standings
and communtiy service
recognition while in high
school has won a $600 B.C.
Tel employee dependent
scholarship.

Claire Leach-Moore of 627
Baycrest Drive is a graduate
of Seycove Secondary Com-
munity School. In her final
four years she achieved
higher than a 6.6 on a seven
point scale, thus earning her
the school’s Honors Level
Achievement Award.

While maintaining this
standing, Leach-Moore also
received an Award of Merit
Medallion each year from the
school for outstanding par-
ticipation in = student § ac-
tivities. Her extra-curricular
activities included an out-
doors club, dance committee,
executive graduation com-
mittee, travel club, gym-
nastics club and volleyball
team.

In addition, she has par-
ticipated in selected com-
munity activities including a
baseball team, and a crew ac-
tivities committee at her place
of work.

She is presently studying in
the faculty of science at
Simon Fraser University. She
seeks a bachelor of science
degree, after which she will
apply to medical school to
pursue a career in psychiatry
or another branch of
specified medicine. She is the
daughter of B.C. Tel fun-
damental toll planning super-
visor Bob Leach-Moore.

The B.C. Tel employee
dependent scholarship is in
its sixth year and provides up
to four scholarships annually
for dependents of employees.
The scholarships are
available to children of cur-
rent, retired or deceased
employees of B.C. Tel, and
its subsidiaries, who are
entering the first year of
studies of any recognized
post-secondary institution in
Canada.

The four scholarship win-
ners this year were selected
from 65 applicants by an in-
dependent committee com-
prising Vern Loewen, Simon
Fraser University, Jennifer
Orum, British Columbia In-
stitute of Technology and
Jim Anderson, Kwantlen
College.

The other three winners
were Phillip Sabbagh of
Pender Island, Brenda
Davison of Vancouver and
Pauline Alakija of Penticton.

To make the decision, the
committee assessed high
school records, letters of
recommendation from high
school officials and descrip-
tions of the students’ com-
munity involvement. The
winners have ail participated
actively in both curricular
and extra-curricular activities
at their schools including stu-
dent councils, clubs and
music and sports programs.
