But it doesn't have to be. With a little patience, you can teach your dog to grect people in a more acceptable fashion. Through the eyes of a dog, this jumping behaviour is very practical. Yet to humans we can’t scem to understand why dogs must jump on us. We just think it’s a bad dog. To correct its we must first understand why some dogs jump. oo, Dogs, as very social ani- mals, have certain protocols as to how to greet and interact with each other. In dog language, when two dogs meet they always follow a ritualistic pattern. Dogs will begin the greet- ing process by touching noses and then sniffing the face, cars and neck area. This may be done in a matter of seconds. . All of these areas have odours which give another dog information about age, sex, pack status and health. Dogs will then proceed along the back to either sniff- ing the genitals and/or the anal area. Again, these areas hold odours which contain infor- mation that dogs can inter- gS anew way t pret. When a dog grects a human, they naturally want to follow those same greeting rit- uals, because that’s what they know. Since humans stand upright, to some extent we encourage the jumping behav- iour. Dogs have to get up to our faces somehow so they jump up on us to begin the greet- ing. By jumping up, the dog gets to sniff our nose, muuth, ears and neck area. When it sticks its nose in our crotch, it is doing the same thing it does with other dogs. This is what they do to each other so they assume the greet | same is OK for humans. Now that we know why this behaviour is happening we can modify it. To do this properly, you must recruit a helper. This helper will be the one your . dog will be greeting the new way, so you must trust that they can follow instructions. Give your helper two treats that he/she will hold in a fist behind their back. Your helper will begin by crouching down. This crouched position aliows your dog to keep all fours on the floor because the ‘helper’s face is right in front of your dog.
