& - Wednesday, September 28, 1988 - North Shore News NMUCLEAR SUBS NECESSAKY lavy needs submarines Dear Editor: Should you or the repre- sentatives of the North Shore's three municipalities ever take the time to understand the issues jn- volved in modernizing the Cana- dian Navy you would be shamed into withdrawing your Nuclear Nonsense editoria) with the municipal representatives pleading ignorance. Canada is a sovereign nation with the second largest Jand mass in the world fronting on three oceans. The livelihvuod of some 25 per cent of its people derives from import and export trade carried by ocean shipping. The Navy is ob- solete. In order to provide a modern ‘balanced fleet’? professionals have determined the best option. Nuclear-pewered submarines were chosen over diesel-powered as they are vastly superior in speed, en- durance and power. The cost for either of these options is the same. While the cost is significant | do not observe in your editorial that the $8 billion will be spent over 25 years — about $300 million an- nually. Nor do you identify that this is less than 3 per cent of Canada’s current defence budget of some SII billion a year. Lux- embourg is the anly country in NATO which spends less of its gross domestic product on defence than Canada. ht is impossible to equate pro- viding some modern protection for our sovereignty to overhauling municipal infrastructures. Both should be kept modern, But if the Navy is required to use old techno- logy (i.e. diesel-powered — sub- marines) then the infrastructure should be subject to the same con- cept (.e. 1950 sewer plant design for the 24st century), You and our municipal repre- sentatives are guilty of a disservice to both our local communities and the nation, Sohn E. Hall Lt.-Cmdr. RCN (R) Ret'd. North Vancouver Hunter spewed ‘venom, hatred’ Dear Editor: Mr. Bob Hunter's vituperative piece on Mr. Turner, the Senate and the Free Trade Bill demands comment. It has been said that there could be occasions when a government with a large majority may attempt to force legislation through Parliament which was so much against the best intercsts of Canada that the Senate would not only be justified in delaying its passage to allow for sober second thought but that such cir- cumstances by themselves justified the existence of that body. There are arguments that the trade bill with its peripheral implica- tions and the rush for its passage with limited public and parliamen- tary scrutiny is such an occasion, There are other arguments that it is not, Mr. Hunter did not contribute to the debate by making those arguments. He chose instead to spew venom and hatred. Perhaps that is Mr. Hunter's personal trag- edy.
