WV Pathfinders f WEST Vancouver’s 525 Pathfinder Squadron started its new year with increased mem- bership. Space was a litle tight as the air cadets of the West Vancouver squadron paraded during their recent wings parade. The squadron is enjoving its largest. membership in recent years. The registration of 39 cadets means that there are now two flights within the squadron, It was a special evening for Squadron Commander Kevin Wong as) he received his wings, courtesy of a cadet glider scholarship. Also receiving a promotion to warrant officer, he and the squadron's commanding offi- cer, Captain Rick Nicholson accompanied Area Cadet Advisor WO) Bruce Koronko as he inspected the ranks. Those included newly pro- moted LACs (Leading Air Cadet) and corporals, as well as a number of new recruits. Cadets have a number of opportunities available to them through the program which is overseen) by the Royal Canadian Air Cadet league. The programs include wilderness survival, rifle shooting, sports, power flying and gliding. Numerous scholarships are awarded to cadets, the most lucrative being those that result in a private pilot's licence. Every summer a large number of cadets attend vari- ous camps courtesy of the cadet program. Leadership is a major focus, with all details of the program being carried out by the cadets themselves, over- scen by qualified officers and instructors and supported by a parents’ committee. Some cadets go on to the armed forces, but the majority use what they have learned in the cadet program to enhance their private careers and ambi- tions. Young men and women berwcen the ages of 12 and 18 who would like more intor- mation about the program can contact Caprain Rick Nicholson at 929-1318, or visit the squadron’s website at www. business indow.con,/ve 2r2000/525/pathtinder.him.
