Locals land Women of Distinction awards

NORTH Shore resi-
dents scooped up four
of 10 honors Thursday
at the Vancouver
Y¥8VCA’s 1998 Women
of Distinction awards.

The awards were created in
‘84 to recognize wornen for
their achievements in arts and
culture, communications and
public service; education, rrain-

ing and development, entrepre-
neur/innovator; health aud
wellness, the professions and
trades, recreation, spert and
active fiving; science and tech-
nology, voluntary community
and humanitarian service and
young women of distinction.

The winners were chosen
from 43 nominces.

North Shore residents hon-
ored Thursday at the Hyatt
Regency were:

Ann Cowan, die program

university’s Canadian Centre

category of education, training
and development.

entrepreneur/innovator

of Burnaby South secondary

recreation, sport and active liv-
ing category.

Gillian Lockitch, a professor in
pathology and laboratory med-
icine at UBC, in the science
and technology category, cliai-
eal psvchologist Leora Kuttner
in the health and wellness cate-
gory, SFU business protessor
Rosalic Tung in the profession-
als and trades category and
Carole Anne Soong, an advo-

cate for women’s equality and
ardent voluntger, in the catego
ry of communications and pub-
lic service. :

Leah Costello, founding
owner of Silver Spoon Catering
Inc. and co-founder of the
Young Entrepreneurs
Association of B.C., was recog-
nized as this year’s Young
Woman of Distinction.
