Maureen Jack on some of what's up
at the conference:
Michael: Why the focus this year
on independent labels?

Maureen: “The - . independent
record companies have a very signif-
icant role to play in the music indus-
try. The industry is comprised of

‘small independent business people.

“Most people think of the big
five, the multi-nationals that keep
eating each other up. But in fact |
think the heart and soul and the life
blood of the music industry is with
the small independent entrepre-
neurs.

Michael: Right, and they seem to
be feeding the majors us they go
about eating themselves up.

Maureen: “They serve many
functions. They are the farm team.
They are the scouts out there getting
the talent and developing them.
Quite often the majors get involved
with the independent labels because
of the economies of scale. And at a
certain point it's advantageous for
an independent to have a relation-
ship with a major because of distri-
bution.”

Michael: Do you sce a prolifera-
tion of independent labels right
now?

Maureen: “There is. We looked
around and went, ‘My God!’
There’s so many of them and it’s
wonderful.

“So often an artist will send a
tape out to a major label and get
back a form rejection letter and
because one person has said no, |
don’t believe you should just pack
your bags and go home, If you
believe in your art and in what
you're doing then you find the ways
to do what you want to do. Many
independent labels are in fact bands
putting out their own records and

“ tapes.”

Michael: Another important
aspect of the industry Music West
is focusing on this year is the
Internet. ;

Maureen: “Yes. The Internet is
being touted as the fifth media and
it is, It is not only a channel for
communication, what is being
explored at the conference is the
point that it is a channel of distribu-
tion.

“Right now you're not allowed
to reproduce a song without paying
a mechanical copyright. Up until
now mechanicals have only been
paid on CDs and tapes and records.
It’s now possible to put that system
in place, download music from the
Internet and make sure that musi-
cians are paid.

“Indi bands are able to put their

tribution.

“It is a great equalizer and a rev-
olutionary element that’s going to
be transforming the music industry.”
