12 - Sunday, August 21, 1994 - North Shore News IN VIEW of the XV Commonwealth Games taking place in Victoria this week, one wonders if it’s really necessary to place so much emphasis — financial and otherwise — on athletic com- petition. There are so many different amateur sporting events these days that it’s hard to keep up with them all. A sampling of some of the games include: the B.C. Summer Games, the Canada Games, the Pan-American Games, the Gay Games, the Goodwill Games, and the Olyrapic Games — just to name a few. There is so much money tied up in playing and watching sports that these games have become products, packaged and marketed for ihe masses, Is it really worth all the hype? Well, it is to the fans and to the athletes who thrive on competition and on giving one’s all to n sport. But the Commonwealth Games are not only about 3,345 athletes competing for 9£2 medals. They are also about international exposure. Exposure for B.C., exposure for Victoria, and exposure for all the artists — dancers, tausicians, composers — who are part of the culturat festivities that sur- round the games. Millions of eyes are watching! Do we place too much importance on events like the Commonwealth Games? Isabel Gordon North Vancouver No, we don't. I think the games are really good for the community. It brings people together. And while 1 do think we need to place more emphasis on things other ‘than sports, 1 wouldn't want to take away from what they're doing.
