GOAL LINES “IT’S MORE Than Just a Golf Show, It’s a Full Day Out on the Course!”’ That was the theme utilized by promoters of the hugely successful Vancouver Golf Show staged this past weekend at the PNE’s Food Building and Forum. . For North Vancouver’s Ary ‘Olson, his brief visits Saturday and Sunday did, indeed, feel like “*a full day out on the course.’’ Less than a month ago, Mon- day, Jan. 27, to be precise, Olson suffered a brain hemorrhage. He woke up in the middle of the night with a horrible headache and within minutes his wife, Alice, was dialing 911 for the paramedics. During his recovery period at St. Paul’s Hospital, Olson con- tinually expressed concern about not being able to attend the an- nual golf show. The arrangements he’d made to be on hand to pro- mote his new book, Backspin ... 100 years of golf in British Col- umbia, had fallen by the wayside with his sudden sickness. Realizing his concern, a small army of friends and admirers assured Arv his 2'-years-in- the-making publication would be “dutifully displayed at the B.C. Golf Centennial booth. . Never in their wildest dreams did any cf them figure Olson would be strong enough to make an appearance, fet alone accom- modate people buying the book with personalized autographed copies. : When the in-house public ad- dress announcer spread the word that Olson was on the premises Saturday afternoon, long lineups of well-wishers instantly assembl- ed at the B.C. Golf Centennial location. One young man who purchased a book and waited patiently to meet Olson was Craig Lennon, a member at Seymour Golf & ‘Country Club and an_ earnest committee worker for the annual Jake Miiferd Invitational charity golf tournament. Olson, a sportswriter for the Vancouver Sun for the past 36 years, asked enough questions to determine that he had purchased his wedding ring from Craig’s deceased dad, Joe, in another time zone when upstart reporters were happy to be making $7,000 a year. Craig was pleased. On the short drive home over the Second Narrows Bridge fater in the afternoon, Olson said, ‘‘I feel as though I've had four tum-and-cokes and I'm a little dizzy, but | wouldn't have missed today for all the money in the world. It was great therapy.”’ He returned ‘for more Sunday under the constant surveillance of Alice, whom Arv describes as ‘*my wife and best friend.” Several of Olson’s ‘‘golfing brothers’? contributed to his ther- apeutic weekend;- Chuck Gage, Dick White, Mike Keffer, Dorothy Brown, Tan Fraser and fellow Pacific Press inksters Ar- chie McDonald, Denny Boyd and Kent Gitchrist. The smile on Arv’s face, the twinkle in his eye, made their ef- forts so worthwhile. It was, without question, than just a golf show.’” “more STOPS 'N STARTS: New Westminster~born David McGrath, 43, »as landed the job as head pro of the Lee Trevino- designed Swan-e-set Bay Resort & Country Club in Pitt Meadows that opens this summer.
