Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL LAST YEAR, Sentinel High School teacher Barry Rec- tor was honored interna- tionally with the title of “The Best Whistler in the World.”’ This past weekend he was in- vited to Louisberg, North Carolina, to be the special guest performer at the National Whistler Convention. Accom- panied by pianist Katie Drysdale, Barry gave a two-hour concert and received several standing ova- tions. ‘The good news is that you can see and hear this whistling wonder ia concert on Sunday, May 31, at 2:30 p.m. at West Van Secondary School’s theatre on Mathers. It'll be a fundraiser for Canuck Place, the desperately-needed hospice for children. And there’s a reason for the choice of fund- raiser. A few years back, Barry and his JOAN! TAYLOR wife, Merle, lost their little five- year-old daughter, Heidi, to cancer. While Heidi was in 3-B at Children’s Hospital, her dad used to come up to be with her and entertain all the little patients with their favorite tunes. If one of these children passed away, Barry would be there at the funeral, whistling the child’s favorite music. He's not only a talented artist, he’s quite a remarkable human being. Tickets to the benefit concert are only $8 (36 for students and seniors) and are available at the three West Vancouver high schools and Tom Lee Music. You'll not only support a worthy charity, you’ll get to see and hear a real champion... There were all sorts of champi- ons at last Saturday's Return of the Firefighter’s Ball at the Hotel Vancouver where 750 black-tie and uniformed guests packed the ballroom for the $75-a-plate fundraiser for Vancouver General Hospital’s burn unit. Moneyman Murray Pezim, B.C. Lions owner and honorary fire chief, was instrumental in the sell-out. He has the greatest ad- miration for the smoke-eaters and assists wherever and whenever he can. The lovely young blonde on The Pez’s arm was Michelle Schagle, who looked angelic in short, full, white satin from Heatherington’s in Park Royal and was perfectly accented by her long, drop diamond-and-pearl earrings. She’s in great shape, too. She was one of the runners in last Sun- day’s Vancouver International Marathon. The North Shore was repre- sented well at the do. Murray’s genial right-hand man, Harvey Gold, was there along with Prime Sports’ Frank Gigiiotti and his cute Dorothy, while Harvey's seat-mate was the slimly sequinn- ed Lisa Masse. Lisa’s husband, Nick, was up to Sonora on Harry Moll’s annual fishing trip. BARRY RECTOR Recent arrival from California, Bonnie Johnson, stock promoter and close friend of TV’s Robin Leach, lit up the room in brilliant yellow. ‘ Former West Van resident and newly blonde Dusty Martell is back on late night BCTV on MURRAY PEZIM gets in 2 few licks on the bass drum as the VFD band warm up on Georgia St. prior to their performance at the black-tie affair. Thursdays. The chic Dusty’s date was iall Shane Barber, a West Vancouver undercover cop. Some other charming young women who Icoked simply sensa- tional were former beauty queens Dariena Rosen and Judy Lowrie. They reported that Laura Leard, the former Miss B.C. Lions and Miss Grey Cup, is back in town. Laura was married a couple of years ago to a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and lives in San Diego. Her husband has recently been posted overseas so Laura is back here taking courses at UBC. Big Chief of the Vancouver Fire Department Don Pamplin and his wife, Carroll, were all smiles. Donaid, a Park Royal Towers res- ident, retires from the VFD on Sept. | after 38 years on the job. The Pez called Donald ‘‘one of the classiest guys I know.’” Firefighters president Dave Mit- chell and his wife, Maureen, were at the headtable along with NDP MLA Mike Farnsworth, Ald. Don Bellamy and his Ness and band president Alfi De Biasio and his wife, Shirley. The award-winning 50-member VFD band was a great addition to the festivities and NW’'s Rick Honey couldn’t have been a better emcee! ; B.C. Lions head coach Bob O'’Bilovitch was on hand with new quarterback Danny Barrett, coach Soe Pao Pao, the Lions’ front four and the cheerleaders. Firefighter Ball organizers Bob Hollier and Dan McClelland even surprised themselves with the suc- cess of the evening. This was the first Firefighter’s Ball in 17 years. THE CORPORATION OF THE DISTRICT MC RICK Honey chats with the Lions’ firefighter’s bail. It will definitely become an annual event... Ambleside’s talented Joani Taylor, who’s been on stage with such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Little Richard and Taj Mahal and who has long been the number one session singer in Vancouver, is about to launch her brand new lan Sinclair at the compact disc called Absolutely Joani Taylor. After a hiatus of seven years to devote to songwriting and to her young family, she’s recorded 15 songs with backup by super pianist Ron Johnston and friends. The CD is going to be on music score shelves any second now. Wait for it! Cheers and Happy Mother’s Day!
