10 - Wednesday, January 8, 1992 — Anna Marie INQUIRING REPORTER North Shore News UPSET VANCOUVER Aquarium staff broke tragic news to the public Sunday after the sudden death Saturday night of the baby killer whale, K'yosha. A subsequent autopsy revealed that the 97-day-old calf died of a massive brain infection. K’yosha was separated from her mother, Bjossa, in October after it was deter- mined that the baby Orca was becoming malnourished. Vancouver Aquarium staff created and administered by hose a nutrient-rich formula for the baby whale who seemed to thrive on the food. But the formula did not contain any infection-protecting antibodies found satu- rally in mother’s milk. Fhe aquarium staff seemed con- fident K'yosha would beat 50/50 odds of survival in December when 3 name-the-whale contest was held. Animal-rights group say K’yosha’s ceath is further proof whales should not be kept in captivity. What is your reaction to K’yosha’s S.1. McAlary North Vancouver Very sad. But [ think the aquarium staff did a ter- tific job in trying to keep her alive. Kelly B Blunden North Vancouver It’s pretty sad. I hope it was a learning experience for the aquarium staff because the whale lived for so long on their for- mula.
