CODA Gredtkyl eagush 13, 10e9w ne eee Néws BEST YEAR WEST VANGOUVER Seniors give direction to Activity Centre THE WEST Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre smashes the stereo- type of a centre where peopie come _to merely participate in activities run for them. From the senior-run Green Thumb group, which sells their plants, to the quilters in the quilt room, the members of the West Von centre give direction to the centre as it evolves. “There’s virtually nothing done in the centre that seniors aren’t in- volved in including maintenance,”’ Linde Lyons, the centre’s director, sai This philosophy not only bolsters the members’ in- dependence but makes use of the vast array of skills and talents among the members. And it is, of course, a two-way street. The activities of the groups who sell their products --- picnts, quilts, handmade woodwork — also help keep the cost of the cen- tre down. And the group members decide how or where the proceeds will be spent on the centre. “Is their centre and they can direct it how they wani,”’ Lyons said. Lyo.is likes to think of the cen- tre as a ‘‘hub”’ of resource infor- mation, a place where people can come for referrals and to be put in touch with the necessary contacts. But the activities at the centre are a valuable starting point where many seniors make new friends with similar interests and learn new skilis with which they can strike cut on a new course. The fall program promises an abundance of activities for al! in- terests and tastes. The program is too extensive to list all classes and is subject to change, but the fol- lowing is a taste of what’s on the fall menu. R. PALLAI & it.
